What is an Atom?
The basic unit that makes up an element
What is an Element?
A substance made of only one type of atom
What is a Compound?
A substance made of more than one type of atom linked together
What is a Mixture?
Multiple substances mingled together, not bonded together
What are the properties of metals?
Conductors of electricity, conductors of heat, shiny, dense, ductile and malleable, sonorous, normally solid at room temperature.
What are the properties of non-metals?
Insulators of electricity, insulators of heat, dull, not dense, brittle, non-sonorous, usually gas at room temperature.
What does ‘soluble’ mean?
Able to dissolve e.g. salt
What does ‘insoluble’ mean?
Unable to dissolve e.g. iron
What is a ‘solute’?
The substance that dissolves in the solvent e.g. salt
What is a ‘solvent’?
The liquid that the solute dissolves in
What is a ‘solution’?
The solute and the solvent combined
What does ‘saturated’ mean?
When a solution is ‘full’, not more solute will dissolve in the solvent
