chem 2 - water Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
what is desalination
A
process of removing salt from salt water
2
Q
how to turn fresh water to potable water
A
- filtration (removes solids)
- sterilisation (to kill harmful bacteria, done using chlorine, ozone or UV light)
3
Q
how to turn sea water into potable water (4)
A
- desalination
- distillation or reverse osmosis used to desalinate water
- filtration
- sterilisation
4
Q
why isn’t sea water the best way to get potable water
A
because both distillation and reverse osmosis need lots of energy so is expensive and not practical in large quantities
5
Q
process of treating waste water (6)
A
- sewage is screened (removes larger pieces)
- sedimentation (where it stands in a settlement tank and separates into sludge and effluent)
- effluent treated with biological aerobic digestion (breaks down organic matter)
- sludge broken down with anaerobic digestion
- filtration
- sterilisation
6
Q
what happens with the sludge that undergoes anaerobic digestion
A
it releases methane gas, which is used as an energy source
and the rest of the waste is used as a fertiliser
7
Q
which is the best sewage treatment or sea water treatment
A
waste water since it uses less energy than salt water during desalination
