Chem atomic theory Flashcards

Daltons atomic theory
All matter is made up of very small particles called atom
All atoms are indivisible they cannot be broken down into smaller particles
Cathode rays
Streams of negatively charged particles called electrons travel in straight lines from cathode to anode are deflected by electric and magnetic fields sufficient energy to move a paddle wheel
Energy level
Fixed energy value that an electron in an atom may have
Ground state
The electrons occupy the lowest available energy levels
Exited state
Electrons occupy higher energy levels than those available in the ground state
Heisenbergs uncertainty principle
It is impossible to measure the velocity and position of an electron at the same time
Orbital
Region in space within there is a high probability of finding an electron
Sublevel
Subdivision of a main energy level and consists of one or more orbitals of the same energy
