Chemical change Flashcards
(27 cards)
Physical property
properties that you can observe using our five senses or being able to measure it directly.
Chemical property
When the property’s substance gets mixed with a different substance in order to create a new chemical or create 2 or more chemicals when the substances break up.
Flammability
Whenever a substance can catch fire.
Reactivity
Whenever a substance gets a displacement from another substance (usually done with metals).
Toxicity
If a substance can cause a danger for your health when combined with your body’s substances.
Solid
When the particles are in close contact with each other and cannot change shape easily.
Liquid
A state of matter where the particles are a bit far apart from each other but can take shape easily.
Gas
An air-like fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity.
Melting
The process when a solid changes into a Liquid.
Evaporation
The process of a liquid changing into a Gas.
Condensation
The process of a Gas turning into a liquid.
Freezing
Another word for solidification.
Solidification
The process of a Liquid turning into a solid.
Sublimation
When a solid turns into a Gas.
Deposition
The process of turning a Gas into a Solid.
Desublimation
Another word for the process of Deposition.
Reaction rate
The rate of which reactions occur.
Catalyst
A chemical that can start or speed up a chemical reaction.
Rusting
The corrosion of metals
Corrosion
When a substance eats away another substance.
Rust
The chemical reaction with metals, water and oxygen.
Surface corrosion
Covering a metal surface from rust.
Galvanising
Covering a metal with a more reactive metal.
burning
combining a substance with oxygen in a flame
