chemical equilibria 3.1.6 in all papers Flashcards
(10 cards)
when is dynamic equilibirum achieved?
rate of forward reaction = rate of backwards reaction
what happens when pressure is increased?
- system reacts to decrease pressurre
- equilibrium moves in the direction of less particles
what happens when pressure decreases?
- system reacts to increase pressurre
- equilibrium shifts to side with more molecules
what happens if the amount of molecules are equal on both sides and conditions change?
no effect
what happens if tempreture increases?
- system will try to decrease it
- favours endothermic side and shift to that side
what happens if tempreture decreases?
- system will try to increase tempreture
- system will favour exothermic reaction and shift to that side
whats the effect of adding a catalyst on the position of equlibrium?
no effect
what does it mean if the Kc value is greater than 1?
products exceed reactants, reaction almost goes to completion
what does it mean if the Kc value is less than 1?
reactants exceed products, when its close to 0 the reaction hardly occurs
what factors affect Kc value?
ONLY tempreture
- in an endothermic reaction, kc increases as tempreture increases
- in an exothermic reaction kc decreases as tempreture increases
