Chemical Reactions Flashcards
(19 cards)
atom
The smallest part of an element that can exist.
chemical reaction
A change in which atoms are rearranged to create new substances.
combustion reaction
A chemical reaction in which a substance reacts quickly with oxygen and gives out light and heat.
compound
A substance made up of atoms of two or more elements, strongly joined together.
decomposition
A chemical reaction in which a compound breaks down to form simpler compounds and/or elements.
discrete
A variable that can only have whole-number values.
electron
A negatively charged particle found orbiting the nucleus of atoms.
element
A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.
molecule
A group of two or more atoms, strongly joined together.
metal
Elements on the left of the stepped line of the Periodic Table. Most elements are metals. They are good conductors of thermal energy and electricity.
neutron
A neutral particle found in the nucleus of atoms.
Periodic Table
A table of all the elements, in which elements with similar properties are grouped together.
physical change
A change that is reversible, in which new substances are not made. Examples of physical changes include changes of state, and dissolving.
nucleus
The centre of the atom, containing the protons and neutrons.
product
A substance that is made in a chemical reaction.
oxidation reaction
A chemical reaction in which substances react with oxygen to form oxides.
proton
A positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
reactant
A starting substance in a chemical reaction.
subatomic particle
The particles that make up an atom.
