Chemical Reactions Flashcards
(8 cards)
Do chemical reactions just go one way?
No, they are constantly going in both ways, though the flow can be greater in one direction depending on the conditions.
Weaker Bonds vs. Stronger Bonds
Weaker bonds are less stable, and therefore contain more free energy. Stronger bonds are more stable, and therefore have lower potential energy.
Exergonic Reaction
Release of energy that can do work in the cell. Cell respiration. Catabolism. ATP-> ADP
Endergonic Reaction
Requires input of energy to proceed. Active transport. Cell movements. Anabolism. ADP->ATP
ATP in this context.
Very unstable bond between last phosphate group and ADP. Therefore there is a lot of energy but it is not super stable.
Coupled Reactions
reactions where energy from an exergonic reaction goes into an endergonic reaction.
How do you overcome Activation Energy?
By heat or by enzymes. Enzymes make the reaction happen faster.
How do enzymes work to lower Activation Energy?
- Bring reactants into close proximity 2. Bind to reactant to cause physical strain 3. transfer charge, changing shape or reactivity
