Chemistry Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the factors that increase reaction rate?
Agitation
temperature change
concentration
catalyst
surface area
what is a catalyst?
a component added to a chemical reaction that speeds up the rate of the reaction without being part of the product.
What is a precipitation reaction?
One in which dissolved substances react to form one solid product.
Change of colour, going cloudy: solid particles from to make solution cloudy
Precipitation reaction
What are the observations of a precipitation reaction?
Change of colour, going cloudy: solid particles from to make solution cloudy
What are some of the features of acids?
Acids have to be dissolved for them to act as an acid
Turn litmus indicator red or pink
React with metals
Taste sour
What are some properties of Bases?
Have to be dissolved in water to act as a base
Soapy feeling, bitter taste
Turn litmus indicator blue
No not react with metals
React with acids and neutralise them, produces salt and water
What does a neutralisation reaction produce?
Water and salt
What would a strong acid be on the pH scale?
Small number. Neutral is 6, above is alkali
What is this reaction?
NaOH + HCl -> NaCl + H2O
Neutralisation
What does an acid carbonate reaction produce?
Carbon dioxide, other product such as calcium chloride, and water. Produces bubbles
