Chemistry Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is matter and what is it made of?
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass and is made up of tiny atoms.
What is a pure substance?
Particles of a pure substance are all the same and it only has 1 visible phase/part
What is a mixture?
A mixture is made up of 2 or more substances and has more than 1 visible phase/part.
What can pure substances be broken into?
They can be broken into elements or compounds.
What can mixtures be broken into?
Mixtures can be broken into Homogenous or heterogenous mixtures.
what is an element?
A n element is made up of atoms such as sodium
What is a compound?
A compound is made up of molecules carbon dissulfide.
Can compounds be broken down?
Compounds can be broken down into atoms but elements can not since they are in their purest form.
What is the difference between homogenous and heterogenous?
Homogenous mixtures are only made up of one phase such as sodies which can also be called a solution. Heterogenous mixtures are made up of multiple mixtures such as pizza.
What is a physical property?
A physical property of an object is something that we can observe with out senses.
What is a chemical property?
A chemical property is testing how a substance reacts with another subtance.
What is the clarity or transparency of an object?
Clarity or transparency is a physical property that shows how much light an object allows to pass through it.
Transparent: lets all light pass through
translucent: allows a bit of light to pass through
opaque: allows no light to pass through.
What is colour?
A physical property that shows the colour of an object.
What is crystal form?
Crystal form is a physical property that determines the definite structure of blocks.
What is density?
Density is a physical property that determines the amount of matter per unit volume of an object
What is Ductility?
A physical property that determines an objects ability to be stretched into a wire.
What is hardness?
Hardness is a physical property that determines an objects resistance to being scratched on a scale of 1 -10.
What is lustre?
Lustre is a physical property that determines an objects ability to reflect light, how shiny the object is.
What is malleability?
Malleability is a physical property that determines an objects ability to be bent into different shapes or hammered into thin sheets.
What is odour?
Odour is a physical property that determines the scent or smell of an object
What are the states of matter?
The states of matter are physical properties that refer to an objects condition whether it is solid, liquid, or gas.
What is taste?
Taste is a physical property that determines the taste of an object.
what is texture?
texture is a physical property that determines how an object feels.
what is viscosity?
viscosity is a physical property that determines the resistance of liquid to flowing.
