(20 cards)
what is the bigbang?
The bigbang is a series of events that occured 13.8 billion years ago. It marked the creation of space, time, and energy. The first few elements that were created from the big bang are hydrogen and helium.
What is the composition of the universe? What is it made of?
The universe is made up of %70 dark energy, %25 dark matter, and %5 normal matter such as elements from the periodic table
Name the planets of the solar system in order.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
What is a black hole?
A black hole is a region in space that has an extremely strong gravitational pull that does not let anything escape, including light.
What are the 3 types of galaxies?
The three types of galaxies are spiral galaxies, elliptical galaxies, and irregular galaxies.
What is a dwarf planet?
A dwarf planet is a small planet that orbits the sun but does not clear its orbit from debris.
What is satellite?
A satelite is a natural and artificial object that orbits a planet or other body in space.
What is a galaxy?
A galaxy is a massive system of stars, dust, gas, and dark matter bound together by gravity. (milky way)
What is a constellation?
A constellation is a group of stars that form a shape or pattern in the sky and are meant to illustrate a teaching.
What is a white dwarf?
A white dwarf is a small and very dense star that is usually the size of a planet.
What is a solar eclipse? Draw a diagram and explain it.
A solar eclipse occur when the moon alines perfectly in between the sun and the earth and blocks the sun light, creating a glowing ring around the moon. Draw a diagram
What is a lunar eclipse? Draw a diagram and explain it.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is in between the sun and the moon, and a shadow is casted on the moon, giving it a red hue of a color.
What type of eclipse happens more often and why?
Lunar eclipses happen more often and are more common because the Earth’s shadow is larger than the moon and covers a greater spot. However, when a solar eclipse occurs, the shadow that the moon casts is much smaller and cover a smaller spot on Earth, making them less common.
What planet has the closest rotation period to Earth?
Mars
What planet is Earth’s twin?
Venus
What causes day and night?
Day and night are caused by the Earth’s rotation on its axis. As the Earth rotates on its axis, one half of the Earth faces the sun experiencing day, while the other half faces the other side, experiencing night.
What causes tides? Draw a diagram and explain it.
Tides are caused by the moons gravitational pull on Earth because the Earth is pretty close to the moon. Firstly, the moon pulls on the tides facing it which also causes the Earth to shift towards a moon, leaving 2 high tides on Earth. One tide is locate on the side facing the moon and the other side is on the back of the Earth.
What causes seasons? draw a diagram and explain it.
Seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis. When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun during summer months, its the summer solstice. When the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, its the winter solstice. Autumn and spring are the transition periods between summer and winter and they mostly receive equal sunlight.
What is a comet?
A comet is a rocky icy celestial body that orbits the sun and develops a burning tail when heated.
Draw a diagram of the moon phases and why they occur.
We see phases of the moon because of the moon orbiting the Earth and the way the sunlight illuminates the moon as it orbits the Earth. As the moon orbits the Earth, different parts of its sunlit half become visible from the Earth, creating phases.
