Chemistry Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are precipitation reactions?
Occurs when aqueous solutions/dissolved substances react to form one or more solid products.
What are combustion reactions?
Occurs when a fuel (usually a hydrocarbon) combines with oxygen to form CO2 and H2O.
What are double displacement reactions?
Two compounds completely swapping ions with each other simultaneously, creating two new compounds.
What are single displacement reactions?
One element/group of elements is removed and replaced by another element.
What are synthesis/combination reactions?
Involves two or more substances combining to make a new substance.
What are decomposition reactions?
A single substance is broken apart into 2 or more simpler substances.
What is an aqueous solution?
A mixture in which a substance is dissolved in water. Denoted by (aq).
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element, made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.
What does balanced mean in a chemical equation?
A chemical equation where both sides have the same number of each type of atom.
What is a chemical bond?
An attractive force that holds atoms together.
What is a chemical equation?
A representation of how a chemical reaction rearranges atoms.
What is a chemical formula?
A symbol that shows the chemical composition of a molecule or lattice.
What is a chemical reaction?
The re-arrangement of atoms to form one or more new substances.
What is a chemical symbol?
One or two letters used to represent an element.
What is a coefficient?
A number placed before a formula in a chemical equation.
What is a compound?
Two or more elements joined together by chemical bonds.
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
What is the law of conservation?
The rule that the number of atoms in a chemical reaction remains the same, or that atoms are neither created nor destroyed during a reaction but rearranged.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms bonded together.
What is the periodic table?
The organisation of chemical elements in order of atomic number.
What is a physical change?
A change in matter that does not form new substances.
What is a product in a chemical reaction?
A substance formed by a chemical reaction.
What is a reactant?
A substance that reacts to form one or more new substances.
What does reactive mean?
Tending to take part in chemical reactions.
