9
Q

How is a compound made?

A

When different elements react, atoms form chemical bonds with other atoms to form compounds.

10
Q

What is ionic bonding?

A

When a compound which is formed from a metal and a non-metal consists of ions. The metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions and the non-metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. The opposite charges of the ions mean they are strongly attracted to each other.

11
Q

What is a convalent bond?

A

Where each atom shares an electron with another atom, each atom has to make enough convalent bonds to fill its outer shell.

12
Q

What do balanced symbol equations show?

A

They show the atoms at the start and the atoms at the end and how they’re arranged. For example;
magnesium + oxygen —> magnesium oxide
2Mg + O2 —> 2MgO

13
Q

There should always be the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of a balanced equation.
True or False?

A

True

There has to me the same number of atoms on both sides- they can’t just disappear.

16
Q

What happens when limestone is heated?

A

It thermally decomposes to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide

17
Q

What is a metal ore?

A

A rock with enough metal to make it worth extracting

18
Q

How can metals be extracted from their ores?

A

A metal can be extracted from its ore chemically- by reduction or using electricity to split the metal from its ore- electrolysis

19
Q

What is electrolysis?

A

The breaking down of a substance using electricity

20
Q

What are the disadvantages of limestone quarrying?

A
  1. Ruins landscapes
  2. Noise pollution
  3. Destroys animal habitats
21
Q

What are the advantages of limestone quarrying?

A
  1. Produces the limestone people want
  2. Provides jobs
  3. Landscaping can be done to replace quarry
22
Q

Why is recycling metals important?

A
  • Fossil fuels are running out so we need to conserve them
  • Burning fossil fuels contributes to acid rain
  • Recycling uses less energy
  • Recycling is cheaper
  • Cuts down on the amount of rubbish at landfills
23
Q

What are the main properties that most metals have?

A
  • Metals are strong
  • They are good conductors of heat
  • They conduct electricity well
24
Q

What is an alloy?

A

A mixture of two or more metals

25
Why are alloys made?
To make a stronger metal than the original metal in its pure form
26
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound of hydrogen and carbon only
27
What is fractional distillation?
The separation of a liquid into fractions depending on their boiling point
28
How is fractional distillation carried out?
1. Crude oil is put into the fractionating column 2. The vapourised oil rises up the column 3. The fractions condense when they reach their boiling points
29
What is an alkane?
They are made up of chains of carbon atoms surrounded by hydrogen atoms
30
Crude oil is non-renewable. True or False?
True. Crude oil is non-renewable and will eventually run out
