Chemistry 2 (Matter and Change) Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is an extensive property
a property that depends on the amount of matter that you have
what is an intensive property
a property that does not change based on how much you have
what is matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space
what is mass
A measure of the amount of matter
What is physical change
a change in the substance that doesnt change the identity
eg. change of state
What is a chemical change
A change where one or more substances is converted into one or multiple other substances
- often signified by eat and light
how can one separate compounds
By chemical means - Electricity can split water inot its atoms “Electrolysis”
What are the alkali metals
on the far left
What are the alkaline earth metals
next to the left
what are the transition metals
the metals in the middle of the table
what are the halogens
next to the right
what are the noble gases
The far right of the table
What are the lanthanides
the top of the little rectangle at the bottom
what are the actinides
the bottom of the little rectangle
What are some properties of metals
- good
conductors of heat and
electricity - malleable
- ductile
- high tensile
strength - Lustrous
What are some properties of nonmetals
Poor conductors
Brittle
Many are gases at room temp
Where are the metalloids
on either side of that squiggly line (excluding aluminium)
