Chemistry Flashcards
(12 cards)
Name the element in period one of the periodic table, what is its symbol and what is its electronic structure?
Helium He 2

What is the symbol for calcium and what is its electronic structure?
Ca 2,8,8,2

What is an Ion?
Ions are electrically charged particles formed when atoms lose or gain electrons. They have the same electronic structures as noble gases.
What is an ionic bond?
The strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
For metal atoms and non-metal atoms are the ions positivly charged or negativly charged?
Metal atoms form positive ions, while non-metal atoms form negative ions.
What is a feature of Ionic Compunds?
They have high melting and boiling points.
How do you work out the charge on an Ion for a metal?
The number of charges on an ion formed by a metal is equal to the group number of the metal.

How do you work out the charge on an Ion for a non-metal?
The number of charges on an ion formed by a non-metal is equal to the group number minus eight.

What compound?
Compounds are substances that contain atoms of at least two elements chemically combined. For example: magnesium oxide consists of magnesium atoms and oxygen atoms chemically bonded together.
