Chemistry Chapter 2 Flashcards
How are mixtures and compounds different?
Mixtures are separated easier than compounds, where you have to separate it using a chemical.
How can you identify pure substances?
It has a sharp melting point.
Does a solute disappear when it is dissolved?
You can’t see sugar in a solution but some solutions and solute are coloured and you can see the solute dissolve.
How can we explain dissolving?
When sugar dissolves, water particles surround each sugar particle. The sugar particle mix with the liquid.
Can gases dissolve?
Many gases dissolve in solvents. Carbon dioxide gas makes drinks fizzy.
What is solubility?
The mass of solute that dissolves in 100 grams of water to make a saturated solution.
How does temperature effect solubility?
The higher the temperature, the greater the mass of sugar dissolved.
How does chromatography work?
If you get a pen and draw a dot and put it into a solvent. Water moves up the paper and the dyes of the ink dissolve. Water carries the dye upwards to make a chromatogram.
How do other metals react with acids?
Add hydrochloric acid into a test tube and add the metal you need. Magnesium will be very bubbly but lead will be way less bubbly.
Do all metals react with dilute acids?
Some metals do not and nothing happens. If you add gold, silver or copper to dilute hydrochloric acid nothing will happen.
