Chemistry for Anatomy Flashcards
(11 cards)
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space ~ cannot be created or destroyed
Atom
Smallest component of matter normally found
Subatomic Particles
Protons, Neutrons, and electrons
Protons
positive electrical charge
Neutrons
Neutral ~ they have no charge
Electrons
Negatively charged, rotate outside the nucleus
Element
Substance that is made of only one kind of element and cannot be broken down into anything else
Oxygen
(O) 65% body weight. Part of every organic compound in the body, used in aerobic cell respiration, part of water molecules
Hydrogen
(H) 10% of body weight. Part of every organic compound in the body, aids in controlling pH in the body, part of water molecules.
Carbon
(C) 18% of body weight. Part of every organic compound in the body (truly, C is the backbone of all organic compounds).
Nitrogen
(N) 3% of body weight. Part of all proteins and nucleic acids in the body, sometimes found in carbohydrates and lipids
