Chemistry Of 2.2 Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is matter?
Matter occupies space and has mass.
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest component of all elements that retains the properties of that element.
What are protons?
Protons are positively charged particles that reside in the nucleus of an atom.
What are neutrons?
Neutrons are neutral particles that also reside in the nucleus of an atom.
What are electrons?
Electrons are negatively charged particles that travel in the space around the nucleus of an atom.
What is atomic number?
The atomic number of an element is equal to the number of protons that element contains.
What is mass number?
Mass number, or atomic mass, is the number of protons plus the number of neutrons of that element.
What is an isotope?
Isotopes are different forms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
What is an ion?
An ion is an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
