chemistry paper 1 pt1 Flashcards
(8 cards)
define:
element
compound
element: substance only containing one type of atom
compound: substance containing 2+ different types of atoms chemically bonded
what is the atomic number
the number on the bottom of an element also the number of protons and electrons the element has
what is the mass number
the top number
number of protons + neutrons = mass number
what does the group of an element tell us?
the number of electrons in the outer shell
what is metallic bonding?
how metal atoms bond
form a lattice (grid) of ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons
what is ionic bonding?
metals bond to non metals
metal atoms donate electrons to non metals to form ions surrounded
why do ionic substance have high melting/ boiling points
due to strong ionic bonds
(ions have strong electrostatic forces between them)
what is covalent bonding?
non metals bonding together
they share electrons from the outer shell
