Child as a Mathematician Flashcards
Covers: - Chapter 4: "Child as a Mathematician" - Van Herwegen (2008) - Voutsina (2016) (11 cards)
(brief) What was the study of Van Herwegen (2008) about?
Assessing number processing abilities in TD and WS infants and toddlers
When was the Van Herwegen study from?
2008
What system is argued for in Van Herwegen (2008)
The papers argues for two representational systems, together making up number sense:
- Object-based /object-file system (small numerosities ie 2 and 3)
- Number estimation system (larger numerosities ie 8 and 16)
What is the difference between habituation and familiarization?
Habituation: a stimulus is shown until reaction / engagement drops below a set threshold
Familiarization: A stimulus is shown a fixed amount of times
What task did young TD infants struggle more with: Small numerosities or larger numerosities?
TD children struggle more with small numerosities (when variables such as density and area is controlled for) - and succeed with larger numerosities (depending on ratio - Webers Law - , ie success: 16 vs 32, but not 16 vs 24)
What type task did WS children struggle more with:
Small numerosities or larger numerosities?
WS children struggle more with larger numerosities
Is webers law modal or amodal?
Amodal - the same principle (experienced intensity of stimuli depends on the intensity of intial stimuli) occurs across modalities (ie across the senses; visually, auditory etc.)
What is order indifference?
Order indifference refers to the understanding that, when counting, it does not matter which item you start with
A step in learning counting
What is one-to-one correspondence
One-to-one corresponding refers to assigning each object with a label (a number)
A step (constraint) in learning counting
What is item indifference
