what happens for a child before birth?
evidence suggests that in the womb, a growing baby acclimatises to the sounds of its native language
what does mehler et al suggest?
that French new born babies were able to distinguish the French language from other languages.
they increased their sucking rate at the sound of their native language.
what does fitzpatrick suggest?
that a baby’s heart rate slows at the sound of its mother’s voice
what does decasper and spence suggest?
that a baby can recognise language in the womb
what happens at the pre-verbal stage?
the child will express itself vocally through sounds of discomfort and reflexive actions e.g. crying.
these are instinctive noises.
this stage can be broken down into 3 parts: cooing, babbling and proto words
