US/China Relations - Economic Ties
The US imports A LOT from China, and exports very little in comparision. The US spends more than it makes (budget deficit) so it depends on China to borrow money from.
The US is pro free trade, and China joined the WTO in 2001, which the US believes will benefit them since it will encourage further economic reform in China.
China has had issues with some US policies, like the US hates US pirated content in China, US has health & safety concerns of China’s products.
US/China Relations - Human Rights
China violates a lot of human rights, after Tianenmen Square, Pres. Bush stopped selling military equipment to China, along with foreign aid. China has invaded Tibet and killed people there, forced them out of their homes & suppressed Uighers, a muslim minority in China, both actions of which the US is against.
US/China Relations - Security Concerns
US policy makers worry about China’s military cuz their defense budget keeps increasing. And China sees the US as a threat because of our strong military and unofficial support of Taiwan.
US/China Relations - Diplomatic Cooperation/Tensions
(Hong Kong, South China Sea, Taiwan)
The US & China have had difficultly cooperating in the handling of North Korea, China has acted as a mediator between the US & NK but NK keeps expanding their nucler program despite foreign pressure.
Hong Kong residents have been keen on protecting the democratic rights they had under British rule but now that Hong Kong has been returned to China, the government is pushing down on its autonomy. US officials have expressed concern about how China is suppressing HK’s open capitaistic society.
China is also extending its influence by claiming control over two islands in the South China Sea, that have rich oil deposits. Many of China’s neighbors have made claims to these islands too, but China has demonstrated its unwillingness to compromise.
The US used to support Taiwan but stopped openly after China expressed their zero tolerance for the idea of Taiwan Independence. Though the US has stated support for both countries and the idea of peace between them, we send military stuff to Taiwan, which China does not like.
US/China Relations - China’s Growing Role in the World
China’s role has been steadily growing since the 80s. They have become Africa’s largest trading partner, and has oil refineries, power plants, and mines in various African countries. They also have a seat on the UN security council, and have began to intervene in international affairs. US policy makers are realizing they will have to take into consideration China’s global impact in future policies.
