Chordates Flashcards
(13 cards)
4 main chordate features
- notochord
- single, dorsal, hollow nerve cord
- pharyngeal gill slits
- post anal tail
other chordate features
bilateral, segmented, 3 germ layers, well developed coelom
Notochord
- cartilaginous rod
- present in many embryonic forms
- can form the backbone
- in humans, found in between vertebrae
ectothermy
Animals rely on the environment and behavioural adaptations to regulate body temperature
Benefits of ectothermy
- no use of molecular machinery
- low metabolic rate
- more energy for other processes
- needs less food and water
- can shut down when low resource avaliability
Disadvantages of ectothermy
- harder to maintain homeostasis
- restricted in distribution, struggle to function in cool climates
Endothermy
Animals use heat from metabolism to maintain body temperature
- Uncoupling protein 1: allows flow of proteins without the production of ATP, instead heat
Benefits of endothermy
- consistent body temp
- consistent metabolic rate
- homeostasis
Disadvantages of endothermy
uses lots of energy, and animal MUST eat to survive
Cyclostomes
jawless fish
- lampreys and hagfish
Cyclostome features
- median fins
- 2 chambered heart
- simple digestive system
- sense organs
- external fertilisation
examples of a cyclostome
Hagfish: have a defence mechanism to produce slime against predators
Lampreys: parasitic fish
