Chp 3 Flashcards
(36 cards)
Plasma membrane?
Surrounds cell, defines boundaries
Intracelluar fluid?
Water in the cell.
Extracellular fluid?
Water outside the cell.
Membrane proteins?
Inside the protein.
Peripheral protein?
Outside the cell to anchor the cell.
Functions of membrane proteins?
Receptor Enzyme Channel Gated channel Cell-identity marker Cell adhesion molecule
A receptor?
Binds to chemical messengers such as hormones.
A enzyme?
Breaks down a chemical messenger and terminates its effect.
A channel?
Protein that is constantly open and allows solutes to pass in and out cell.
Gated channels?
Opens and closes to allow solute through only at certain times.
Cell identity marker?
Distinguish the body’s own cells from foreign cells.
Cell adhesion molecule?
A cell adhesion that binds one cell to another.
A microvilli?
Best developed in cells specialized in absorption.
A cilia?
Hairlike processes.
Nonmotile cilia?
Found on sensory nose of cell.
Motile cilia?
Respitory tract, uterine tubes, ventricles of brain, duct of testes.
Flagella is?
Tail of a sperm.
Osmosis is?
Net flow of water through a selectively permeable membrane.
Osmotic pressure?
Hydrostatic pressure required to stop osmosis.
Tonicity?
Is the ability of a solution to affect the fluid volume and pressure in a cell.
Normal saline?
0.9% NaCl
Hypertonic solution?
Causes cell to absorb water and swell.
Hypertonic?
Causes the cell to shrivel.
Three kinds of carriers
Uniport
Symport
Antiport
