Result of the Korean War?
Ended in 1953, with an armistice agreement being signed that segregated north and South Korea along the 38th parallel creating two separate countries.
China suffered heavy losses and it involvement had placed severe strain on its economy however prestige and confidence had been gained as the Chinese’s forced has stood up to capitalist power of America.
Mao began to create his own nuclear weapon to combat the ones owned by America.
He ordered the construction of the third line Chinese defences that included network of command centre and nuclear bunkers in the west of china.
China sucess bolster their image as an anti imperialist state, the image if imperialism was weka post ww2, confirm the countries leadership of a worldwide revolution.
Involvement of Taiwan and the usa?
Korean strengthen the USA’s support for Taiwan and following the Chinese bombartment ofquemoy and Matsu an agreement was signed between Taiwan and America which guaranteed us support for Taiwan while the us had already been providing economic and military aid to the GMD in Taiwan.
1957 the us stationed missiles on the island capable of reaching china, this further Mao belief that china should have nuclear weapons.
The us imposed a ban on trade with china and the countries had no formal diplomatic links as
the us did not recognise the CCP.
China and Vietnam:
Vietnam had been under french rule but during ww2 a communist resistance had rose up called Vietminh resulting in the end of French rule in 1954.
the CCP provided military aid to Vietnamin the form of weapons but the CCP was concerned that the tension in Vietnam could result in a another Korean War and the didn’t want to the extra strain on their resources and encourage the Vietminh to agree to a peace agreement that would give them control over the north of Vietnam and Vietnam was divided along the 17th parallel. Civil war resumed in 1956 and initially there was no chinese involvement, once Americans became heavily involved Mao agreed to supply weapons.
Relations with India and Tibet:
Inida gained its independnace from Britain in 1947 and shared a border with China which had been decided by the British with little care for the people of the area.
India had no issue with Chinese occupation of Tibet, however relation began to deteriorate due to india claiming a road that linked Tibet o the rest of china. This caused border clashes.
In Tibet itself china had began th systematic removal of Tibetans, encouraging Han Chinese to settle.
The Tibetan resistance formed a revolt in1959 which was violently crushed by the PRC. The Dalai Lama was forced to flee and was sadly harboured in India.
The pla launched force into India along the disputed border however a ceasefire was quickly callled.
Sino-Soviet relations:
Due to the international isolation of the PRC post civil war china became reliant upon the USSR for aid in operating machinery, bulidng nuclear weapons and financially. The ussr had given them loan which had to be repaid in full in grain. Mao and Stalins relationship was unequal however Mao and Khrushchev relationship was even wore after he criticised satlin
