What does morally significant mean.
Morally significant- they involve right and wrong
What does morally neutral mean?
Morally neutrall- do not involve questions of right or wrong.
What a three features if morally significant actions?
- It is performed by a moral agent – an intelligent creature that is capable of free choice
2.It is the result of intention; the action was done on purpose with a particular motive.
3.It has significant consequences for others e.g. causing harm or bringing about some benefit.
Why is a Dentological approach?
Deontological approach: there are absolute rules that should be followed at all times. We have a duty to follow these rules in all situations.
What is a Consequentialist approach?
Consequentialist approach: only the consequences determine whether an action is good or bad. What we should do depends on the situation. There are no fixed rules.
Give 3 examples of moral authority for Christian’s:
The bible- The holy book for Christian’s this contains stories like the golden rule, the good Samaritan and the sheep and the goat.
The church - the hierarchy for the Christian religion.
Conscience - the voice in our heads to say if something is right or wrong
When we talk about being a “Good person” we might talk about virtues.
What is a Virtue and give some examples.
Virtue – an ‘excellence of character’. If it is a habit that we can learn to develop.
Examples of virtues – honesty, generosity, courage, faithfulness, self-control
What are five Christian moral principles?
Do not steal
Do not kill
Do not lie
The golden rule “ treat others as you wish to be treated”
Stand up for the weak
What does Agape mean?
Christian love
What does humanism mean?
An approach to life based on humanity and reason
What are the 10 commandments?
You shall not have other gods before God
Do you not make worship any images
Do not take the Lord’s name in vain
Keep the sabbath day holy
On your mother and father
You shall not murder
You shall not admit adultery
You shall not steal
Do not bare false witness against your neighbour
Do not covet things that belong to someone else
