To show devotion and love for God
Types of worship
- Informal worship
- liturgical worship
- Non-liturgical worship
- Private worship
Informal worship
Focuses on the adoration of God and not always done in a church
- Prayer and music often quite modern
- People often believe the holy spirit is present so can be quite spontaneous
- Quaker’s have hour long meetings instead of services where thy are sat in a circle with no set hymns, prayers etc
Liturgical worship
- Happens in a church
- Liturgical worshippers may feel a sense of connection to other worshippers as they are doing the same thing
-Done as a congregation
Non liturgical worship
- More informal and less structured than formal worship
- Sermon could be on a topic of the pastors choosing using the pastors own words instead of pre-planned
The nature and use of prayer
Prayer is To communicate w/ God.
What is communicated?
- Adoration
- Confession
-Thanks giving
-Intercession (ask for God’s help)
Types of prayer
- Set prayer
- The lord’s prayer
- Informal prayer
Set prayer
Prayers that have been written down and said more than once by more than one person, like the Lords prayer
The Lord’s prayer
The prayer taught to the disciples by jesus ; also known as the ‘our father’
Informal prayer
Prayer that is made up by the individual using their own words
Benefits of prayer
-Routine that allows for reflection
- Guidance
- Closer relationship with God
- Comfort
Unanswered prayer
People whose prayers go unanswered may separate from God.
What christians say?
If everything goes right all the time we wouldn’t know joy and because god is all loving he wants us the be able to experience happiness

‘An outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace’

Catholics believe in all seven
Protestant sacraments
- Baptism
- Eucharist
Quaker and Salvation army sacraments
Reject all sacraments because they claim there is no reference to the seven in the bible
- They believe symbols are a distraction from true religion
Baptism
A sacrament where christians believe they are brought closer to God or receive God’s grace. Believe it is important because Jesus did it and told his disciples to.
‘No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.’ - John 3:5
Two types of baptism: infants baptism and believers baptism

Why people are for it: Believe it makes a christian part of God’s family and believe it cleanses the child of the original sin
Why people aren’t for it: Believe the person should be mature so they can fully grasp the situation
Belivers baptism
Total immersion in water to celebrate the person claiming Jesus as their saviour
Holy communion
Known as ‘Eucharist’
To give thanks to God for the sacrifice Jesus made and the last meal he had with his disciples
wine - Jesus’ blood
Bread- his body
Catholics believe in transubstanation

Change on an imperceptible level and the bread and wine become the actual body of christ.
Baptists eucharist
Believe the bread and wine are symbols to bring people together
Orthodox christian eucharist
Believe Jesus is mystically present during eucharist
Church of England eucharist
Believe that Jesus is spiritually present in eucharist but not physically
Pilgramage
a journey made for religious reasons ,alone or with other christians, to a sacred place e.g Lourdes or Iona
