Q

Say the steps of the chromatography of leaves

A
  1. Tear up the leaves
  2. Put them in a mortar and pestle, add a little sand and ethanol, crush
  3. Get the coloured liquid with a pipettes
  4. Put one drop onto chromatography paper, baseline
  5. Place the paper in a beaker with ethanol

Q

Label the steps for separating rice, sand, salt and Fe filings

A
  1. Use a magnet to separate iron filings
  2. Use a sieve to separate the rice
  3. Add water to dissolve the salt
  4. Filter, sand is the residue and salt is the solution in the filtrate
  5. Evaporate to dryness or naturally to get salt

Q

Write the steps for crystallisation

A
  1. Add excess copper oxide to roughly 25cm^3 of sulphuric acid
  2. Filter, copper sulfate solution is the filtrate
  3. Heat the copper sulfate solution until it becomes saturated
  4. Check crystals by smearing the solution onto a microscopic slide with a glass rod
  5. If there are small crystals, leave to cool and crystals form as T decreases
  6. If pure and dry crystals are wanted: In step 5, the solution is allowed to cool - cover with a piece of paper to prevent contamination, and for dry crystals, filter the crystals and dry in a DESICATOR
