Chromatography of leaves Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
Say the steps of the chromatography of leaves
A
- Tear up the leaves
- Put them in a mortar and pestle, add a little sand and ethanol, crush
- Get the coloured liquid with a pipettes
- Put one drop onto chromatography paper, baseline
- Place the paper in a beaker with ethanol
2
Q
Label the steps for separating rice, sand, salt and Fe filings
A
- Use a magnet to separate iron filings
- Use a sieve to separate the rice
- Add water to dissolve the salt
- Filter, sand is the residue and salt is the solution in the filtrate
- Evaporate to dryness or naturally to get salt
3
Q
Write the steps for crystallisation
A
- Add excess copper oxide to roughly 25cm^3 of sulphuric acid
- Filter, copper sulfate solution is the filtrate
- Heat the copper sulfate solution until it becomes saturated
- Check crystals by smearing the solution onto a microscopic slide with a glass rod
- If there are small crystals, leave to cool and crystals form as T decreases
- If pure and dry crystals are wanted: In step 5, the solution is allowed to cool - cover with a piece of paper to prevent contamination, and for dry crystals, filter the crystals and dry in a DESICATOR
