A chronic disease is a long-lasting health condition that usually lasts for a year or more and needs ongoing medical care or limits daily activities
• Diabetes
• Heart Disease
• Asthma
• Arthritis
Name the functions of the Liver?
Makes bile - helps digest fats
Stores energy - in the form of glycogen
Cleans the blood - removes toxins
Makes Proteins - for blood clotting and other functions
Helps fight infections
Define Hepatitis
What are the common causes?
is swelling or inflammation of the liver, usually caused by a virus
• Viruses - like hepatitis a, b, and c
• Alcohol
• Certain medicines
• Toxins - from chemicals
• Autoimmune diseases - the body attacks its own liver
Define Cirrhosis
What are the common causes of Cirrhosis?
is severe scarring of the liver caused by long term liver damage
• Long-term alcohol use
• Hepatitis B or C infections
• Fatty liver disease
• Genetic diseases
• Certain medications or toxins
What are the Signs and Symptoms of liver disease for Hepatitis & Cirrhosis?
• Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
• Tiredness
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea and Vomiting
• Dark Urine
• Pale or Gray stool
What type of care might be given to someone with liver disease?
- give medicine on time
- make healthy, low-salt meals
- watch signs for swelling or yellow skin
- help with bathing or dressing if needed
- keep them clean to prevent infection
- offer rest and gentle activity
As a health care worker, how can you protect yourself from contracting Hepatitis in the workplace?
- wearing gloves & protective clothing
- washing hands
- getting vaccinated for hepatitis b
- following safety rules & procedures
- avoiding contact with blood & bodily fluids
