There was an ancient city, Tyrian colonists held it: Carthage. Facing Italy and the far-off mouths of the river Tiber, rich in resources and very fierce in the pursuits of war. Juno is said to have cherished it alone more than all the lands, with even Samos regarded as inferior; here were her weapons, here was her chariot, here was the place the goddess was at that time already promoting and nurturing as a kingdom for the races, if the fates would at all allow it.
