What is a Cathederal
Cathedrals are special church buildings. The Anglican and Roman Catholic
Churches divide the country up into areas, called dioceses. Each diocese is led
by a bishop, a senior priest, and the church of the bishop is the cathedral.
What can you find in a Cathederal
All things in a normal church plus the cathedra, stained glass windows, Bells.
What are the six main parts of a Christian year
Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentacost.
What is a stained glass window
These windows show stories from The Bible in
picture form. The stories will appear in these windows in the same order as they do in The
Bible. People in the medival times could understand it more.
What do stain glass windows look like
Stained Glass windows are also very decorative and beautiful. Some were pit in a way of prasing God.
What colors do priest wear at different times of the year
There are 4 main colours:
PURPLE – for times of preparation (Advent, Lent)
GOLD/yellow/white – for times of celebration (Christmas, Easter)
RED – times of the Holy Spirit OR to remember the death of a Martyr
GREEN – for the colour of nature – Ordinary Time
What is the altar
A table which holds the items for Holy
Communion. The most important part of the church.
What is the tabernacle
A special cupboard where the consecrated
Eucharist is kept for later use (to be distributed to the housebound after Mass.)

• A special stand for the Bible
• Used for priests/speakers to read from
• Many have Eagles, a sign of spreading the word of God and a symbol of John the Baptist

Holds the holy water for Baptism
What is the crucifix
A cross with the figure of Jesus on it. Reminds Catholics of Jesus’ suffering and death. The symbol of Christianity
What is the pulpit
A pulpit is a raised stand for preachers in a Christian church. The traditional pulpit is raised well above the surrounding floor for audibility and visibility

• Used to light as you say a prayer
• Often lit underneath an image/statue of Jesus, Mary or other Saints

• Used to burn incense in the church
• Can be carried or hung from the walls/ceiling
• Used to help create an atmosphere of holiness
