How can we characterize the relationship between Churchill and Roosevelt?
One sided.
Churchill seemed more affectionate towards Roosevelt.
How did US support Britain in the war?
- November 1939: Repealed Neutrality Act
- September 1940: 50 US destroyer boats exchanged for 8 British Naval bases.
- March 1941: the Lend-Lease Act
- April 1941: US troops in Greenland and Iceland
What did the repeal of the Neutrality Act allow Britain to do?
Purchase American arms.
What was the Lend-Lease Act?
it permitted Roosevelt to ‘sell transfer, exchange’ defense arms.
How much aid did the Lend Lease act provide?
$31.6 billion by 1945
What was Placentia Bay 1941?
- First meeting of national leaders, Canada.
- Creation of the Atlantic Charter
What was the Atlantic Charter?
A document signed by the US and Britain stating that neither countries would use the war for territorial gain.
* This improved the relationship as FDR was worried Churchill was using the war to protect the British Empire.
What were America’s main concerns by 1941
- Believed the continuance of the British Empire was morally wrong
- Britain may use the war to gain territories to add to the Empire.
- Britain had too many troops in North Africa rather than opening a second front.
Why did the USA join the War?
- Japan attacked Pearl Harbour in December 1941.
- Hitler declared war on the USA.
How did the USA joining the war affect the relationship between FDR and Churchill?
- Churchill visited Washington as soon as possible.
- America viewed him as a heroic figure due to his oratory and confidence.
- Initially supported the Mediterranean Strategy and formed the Grand Alliance.
