Circulation Flashcards
(21 cards)
Path of Blood Through the Heart
Vena Cava → Right Atrium → Tricuspid Valve → Right Ventricle → Pulmonary Valve → Pulmonary Arteries → Lungs → Pulmonary Veins → Left Atrium → Bicuspid Valve → Left Ventricle → Aortic Valve → Aorta → Body
What are the 5 types of blood vessels?
Arteries, Arterioles, Capillaries, Venules, Veins
What do arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart under high pressure
What do arterioles do?
Small arteries that can constrict to regulate flow
What do capillaries do?
Allow exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes
What do venules do?
Collect blood from capillaries and lead to veins
What do veins do?
Carry blood back to the heart, have valves to prevent backflow
Where is blood pressure highest?
In arteries, near the heart
Where is blood pressure lowest?
In veins, far from the heart
Why is blood velocity lowest in capillaries?
They have the greatest cross-sectional area
What is pulmonary circulation?
Blood flow from heart to lungs and back
What is systemic circulation?
Blood flow from heart to body and back
O2 content in pulmonary artery vs vein?
Artery = low O2; Vein = high O2
What are the main components of blood?
55% plasma, 45% formed elements
What are the 3 plasma proteins?
Albumin (transport), Fibrinogen (clotting), Globulins (immune)
Function of red blood cells?
Transport oxygen; no nucleus
Function of white blood cells?
Fight infection; immunity and phagocytosis
Function of platelets?
Start clotting process
3 functions of lymphatic system?
Drain fluid, absorb fats, fight infection
What do lymph nodes do?
Filter lymph and produce lymphocytes
Where does lymph return to blood?
Subclavian vein
