Heart Notes Flashcards
(40 cards)
What do the right and left atria do?
Receive blood from body/lungs and send it to the ventricles
What type of blood does the right atrium carry?
Deoxygenated blood
What type of blood does the left atrium carry?
Oxygenated blood
What function do the right and left ventricles serve?
Receive blood from atria and send it to lungs/body
What type of blood does the right ventricle pump?
Deoxygenated blood
What type of blood does the left ventricle pump?
Oxygenated blood
What do coronary arteries and veins do?
Supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients
What does the anterior (superior) vena cava do?
Brings deoxygenated blood from the head & upper body
What does the posterior (inferior) vena cava do?
Brings deoxygenated blood from the lower body
Where do both vena cavas drain?
Into the right atrium
What is the function of the aorta?
Sends oxygenated blood to the body
What do pulmonary arteries carry?
Deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to lungs
What do pulmonary veins carry?
Oxygenated blood from lungs to the left atrium
What is the pulmonary trunk?
Carries blood from right ventricle (via semilunar valve) and splits into left and right pulmonary arteries
What are atrioventricular valves (AV Valves)?
Separate atria from ventricles and prevent backflow
What is the right AV valve also known as?
Tricuspid valve
What is the left AV valve also known as?
Bicuspid (mitral) valve
What do chordae tendineae do?
Hold AV valves in place and prevent inversion
What are semilunar valves?
Half-moon shaped valves that prevent backflow from arteries into ventricles
Where is the pulmonary valve located?
Between right ventricle and pulmonary trunk
Where is the aortic valve located?
Between left ventricle and aorta
What is the septum?
Muscular wall separating right and left ventricles
What is the role of the SA Node?
Natural pacemaker that keeps heartbeat regular
Where is the SA Node located?
Dorsal wall of right atrium
