Circulatory System Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the circulatory system?
The system that contains the heart and the blood vessels and moves blood throughout the body.
Fill in the gap. The heart is made out of _________ muscle.
cardiac
Where does the pulmonary artery take blood to?
The lungs so oxygen can be added to your bloodstream.
Where does the aorta take blood to?
The rest of the body.
What are the 4 chambers of the heart?
The top 2 chambers are called the right atrium and left atrium. The bottom 2 chambers are called the right and left ventricles.
Describe how blood moves around the 4 chambers of the heart.
The right atrium is one of the four chambers and receives blood low in oxygen from the vena cava and contracts into the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps the deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. The left atrium receives the oxygen rich blood and contracts it to the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps the blood to the body through the aorta.
What is a blood vessel?
Channels that carry blood throughout your body.
What do arteries carry?
Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, except the pulmonary artery, under high pressure with thick walls and a narrow lumen.
What do veins carry?
Veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart and have thin elastic walls, a wide lumen, and valves to make sure the low pressure blood doesn’t move backwards.
What do capillaries carry?
Capillaries carry blood to the organs and body systems under low pressure and the walls are one cell thick.
How does a heart attack happen?
When the arteries become blocked or clogged with cholesterol which reduces the amount of blood travelling to the heart.
