Circulatory System Flashcards
(16 cards)
Arteries function
Take blood away from heart
Vein function
Take blood to the heart
Capillaries function
Exchange metabolic materials with cells
Artérioles function
Carry blood under low pressure to cells
Aorta
Blood away from heart from left ventricle to the body
Oxygenated
Vena cava
Blood back to the heart from body to the right artium
Deoxygenated
Pulmonary artery
Blood away from the heart from right ventricle to the lungs
Deoxygenated
Pulmonary vein
Blood to the heart from lungs to left atrium
Oxygenated
Blood plasma
Fluid that bathes the blood cells in the capillaries
Same as tissue fluid but larger proteins in it
Structures/features of blood vessels
Muscular wall
Elastic wall
Endothelium
Lumen
Valves
Vein structure
- large lumen
- thin muscular and elastic walls
- contain valves to prevent back flow
-endothelium
Artery structure
-thick wall and small lumen
- lots of elastic tissue
- quite a lot of muscle tissue (less than aterioles)
- smooth endothelium
Reasons for vein structure
Prevent back flow due to low pressure
Lower pressure
Arteriole structure
- small vessels that branch off from arteries
- elastic layer relatively thinner than arteries
- muscle layer relatively thicker than arteries
Reasons for artery structure
- preventing vessels from bursting from pressure
- endothelium prevents friction making smoother flow
- muscle= contract and relax to change blood flow
- elastic = allows stretching and recoiling to maintain blood pressure
Reasons for arteriole structure
- transport blog from arteries to capillaries
-elastic= blood pressure lower so less needed - muscle= contract and relax to control blood flow to capillary bed
