Haemoglobin Flashcards
(8 cards)
Structure of haemoglobin
Protein made of 4 polypeptide chains each associated with a haem group
How many oxygens can be carried?
4
One by each haem group
What does it carry and form
haemoglobin carries oxygen/ has a high affinity for oxygen = form ozyhaemoglobin
In which cells
Red blood cells
Where does unloading occur
Lungs at high partial pressure
Where does unloading occur
Respiring tissues at low partial pressure of oxygen
How is unloading linked to co2 levels
Higher co2 concentration = unloading
Reason for s shaped sigmoid dissociation curve
1 first oxygen binds to haemoglobin causing change in shape
2 shape change allows more o2 to bind easily and increase saturation quickly
3 at end all is saturated and so curve levels off
