Circulatory System Flashcards
(24 cards)
Explain veins and venules
They take blood from the capillaries to the heart
What do venules do?
They drain blood from capillaries, and then join to form a vein
Are the walls of venule veins thicker or thinner
Thinner
What do valves allow?
They allow blood to flow only to the heart when they are open and prevent backflow of blood when they are closed
What are veins needed for?
They are needed as the blood pressure was lost, due to pushing the red blood cells through the capillaries
Explain the 70% 15% and 10%
At any one time, the veins contain about 70% of the body’s blood about 15% of the total blood volume is in the arteries and only about 10% in the capillaries
Explain the six main points of the arteries
- Carry blood away from the heart.
- Arteries have many layers to handle the pressure.
- Arteries are under high pressure.
- Arteries flow into arterioles
- Systemic arteries carry blood that is high in oxygen.
- The major artery is the aorta.
Explain the six main points of veins
- Carry blood towards the heart.
- Veins have valves to keep blood flowing in one direction.
- Things have low pressure.
- Venules flow into veins.
- Systemic veins carry blood that is low in oxygen.
- The major veins are the inferior and superior vena cava.
Pulmonary system
Path of blood from the heart through the lungs. Deoxygenated blood goes through the right atrium then the right ventricle, then the pulmonary trunk, then the pulmonary arteries, then divide up into arterials of the lungs these arterials take blood to the pulmonary capillaries, which exchange CO2 and O2, the oxygenated blood, then enters the pulmonary veins and venules, and then finally back to the left atrium.
Systemic system
It takes blood from the left atrium to the left ventricle, then through the tissues and organs of the body, then back to the right atrium.
Superior vena cava
Large vein that collects blood from head, chest and arms
Inferior vena cava
Large vein that collects blood from the lower body regions and organs
Hepatic portal system
Connects the blood vessels of villi to the liver that carry nutrients to the liver for processing
Hepatic vein
Carries blood from liver to inferior vena cava.
- Is large compared to hepatic portal vein
Carotid artery
Supply the neck and head with oxygenated blood
Jugular vein
Returns deoxygenated blood from the head and neck toward the heart
What do Coronary and artery vein supply?
They supply blood to the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients
What does aorta get supply?
Supplies blood to all tissues
What does subclavian artery supply?
Rich blood
What does renal artery and vein supply?
Supplies blood to the kidneys
What does iliac artery and vein supply?
Blood supply to the legs
What does mesenteric artery supply?
Supplies blood to the small intestine.
