Circulatory system Flashcards
(17 cards)
Functions of circulation
Transport - respiratory gases, nutrients, waste, mineral salts, hormones, heat
Homeostasis
Disease prevention
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart
High pressure
Oxygenated blood
Capillaries
Small vessels within organs
Allow diffusion from the blood to other cells
Veins
Carry blood towards the heart
Low pressure
Deoxygenated blood
3 layers of veins and arteries
Endothelium
Smooth muscle + elastic fibres
Connective tissue
Anastomosis
Where two or more vessels join together
Portal veins
Transports blood between two capillary beds, rather than directly to the heart
Pulmonary circulation
Only transports blood to and from the lungs for gas exchange
Does not supply any nutrients to tissues
Artery carries deoxygenated blood
Vein carries oxygenated blood
Systemic circulation
Provides blood to any organ except the lungs
Provides oxygen and nutrients and removes waste and carbon dioxide
Aorta
Main artery leaving the left side of the heart
Coronary artery
Supplies the heart
Brachial arteries
Supply the forelimbs
Carotid arteries
Supply the neck and head
Coeliac artery
Supplies the stomach, liver, spleen and pancreas
Cranial mesenteric artery
Supplies the small intestine
Caudal mesenteric artery
Supplies the large intestine
Hepatic portal vein
Drains blood from the small intestine to the liver
