Who was Linda brown and what problems did she face?
7 yo girl in 1951 in Kansas. Not allowed to attend the school she wanted as it was for white children only. She had to travel far to her school and more money was spent on the white school than the black school. This was allowed due to the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson (separate but equal)
What did Linda browns dad do?
He took the Topeka board of education to court in 1951, he lost the case but with the help of the NAACP he appealed the decision. He then reached the Supreme Court of the USA.
What verdict did Earl Warren deliver?
The leader of the judges of the Supreme Court announced that the constitution was colourblind. As it generates a feeling of inferiority in community, badly affects self esteem and permanently disadvantaged them.
Who were the Little Rock 9?
9 Black students who were the first to integrate Little Rock high school in Arkansas in 1957. They faced bullying and racial slurs but kept persevereing. Only girl was expelled for fighting back.
What did president eisenhower do to the Little Rock 9?
He sent 10000 troops and 1000 paratroopers to ensure the LR9 could go to school, he also supported the integration on tvo. He did this to make a statement that the law must be followed and he will make an effort to enforce it. He was also a key role model to many people and his behaviour helped influence over American citizenship on to.
What did orval Faunus do to the LR9?
He announced that the LR9s.hould not enter the school to ensure their safety, he sent state troopers to stop them from entering the school. He used this as an excuse to stop them as he opposed integration.
What happened in 1960?
4 black students from the local uni went into a store and sat at the whites only counter. They remained there all day and returned the next day with 23 other students
