Causes
Economic diff. between north and south: North- industrial, nonslavery, had more railroads, bigger steel production, wealthier South- agriculture, sold tobacco and cotton, slaves, larger farms, low population
Missouri compromise: prohibited slavery in Midwest territory and allowed it in Missouri and Arkansas territory
Compromise of 1850: 5 bills passed which caused confrontation over slavery status in Mexican American war territory
Dred Scott decision: African Americans couldn’t sue someone, federal gov couldn’t regulate slavery in certain states
Battles and events
Antietam: first major battle, fought on union land, bloodiest single day battle, union victory
Emancipation proclamation: changed status of 3 million slaves in certain southern areas slave to free
Role of African Americans: 10% of union army, most were escaped slaves
Gettysburg: most casualties in whole war, 3 days, union victory
Gettysburg address: explained human equality and preserving union,
Reconstruction
Share cropping:landowner allows a tenant to use land for a share of produced crops
Black codes: restricted black freedom, forced them to work in labor economy w low wages or debt
Radical republicans: wanted black to have same rights as black and to punish confederate leaders
13,14,15 amendments: 13- abolished slavery 14- everyone born in US is a citizen including slaves 15- gave ALL men the right to vote
KKK: wanted white supremacy and political power by killing blacks
