Q

What does it mean to you to “decolonize” your research (the one that
you may be proposing)? How would you go about it?

A

To “decolonize” research means to challenge and dismantle the Eurocentric frameworks and perspectives that often dominate academic research. This involves centering Indigenous knowledge systems, perspectives, and methodologies, and respecting Indigenous sovereignty by using the 4 R’s: Respect, relevance, reciprocity, and responsibility. To decolonize research, one could begin by applying indigenous frameworks and seeking guidance from Indigenous scholars and community members.

Q

How would you work with the community/people where you would like
to do your (proposed) research?

A

Working with the community/people where you would like to conduct proposed research involves building genuine relationships based on trust, respect, and reciprocity. This may include engaging with community members, seeking permission and guidance from community leaders and elders. It also requires ongoing communication, transparency, and a commitment to mutual benefit. Additionally, it’s essential to ensure that there is clarity in communication to prevent misunderstandings regarding what is being said and how it’s being communicated. As well as outlining what the community is being signed up for so that they’re not being taken advantage of, and letting the community know what they’re going to do with that research and what it’s being used for the purpose it was supposed to.
