class 2 Flashcards
Element
smallest unique piece of matter
Atomic Number
tells us how many protons the element has
ionic bond
one atom donates electron(s) the other atom is going to accept
Produced ions
eclectically charged atoms weakest bond
cation
positively charged
Anion
negatively charged
electrolytes
broken apart ionic bond
covalent bond
atoms that are going to share electrons
nonpolar covalent bond
electrons are equally shared by the atoms
polar covalent bond
electrons are not equally shared by the atoms (causes polar compound)
hydrogen bond
attaches polar compounds together
Peptide bond
attaches amino acids together to form a protein
Synthesis
attach small pieces together with a chemical bond to form something bigger (a+b=ab)
Decomposition
break something big into smaller pieces by breaking chemical bond (AB=a+b)
Exchange
2 sets of chemical bonds get broken up and rearranged
Molecule
2 or more atoms that are attached to each other by chemical bonds
compound
two or more atoms of two or more elements attached to each other by chemical bonds
inorganic
does not have both carbon and hydrogen as part of its structure but can have one
organic
has carbon and hydrogen as part of its structure
5 examples of inorganic molecules/compounds
H2O,O2,CO2,Salts, acid and bases
