  • giving feedback is a way to let others know our reactions to their behaviour
  • it can improve relationships and remove barriers
  • receiving feedback helps us become more self aware, to determine the consequences of our actions and to change or modify our behaviour

  • gain permission to give feedback
  • be constructive, specific and positive
  • describe without judgement

  • describe what response or change you would like and give the person a chance to come up with a solution

‘sandwiching’:

A
  • sometimes when we need to say difficult things we can find positive comments to ‘sandwich’ the difficult comment
  • it is easier to embrace constructive feedback if we can feel good about some aspects of our performance and work to improve it rather than feeling judged

  • since feedback comes from your perspective. keep in mind how others might feel.
  • people need time to grasp what you are saying. check out reactions “could you tell me..” “what do you think”

receiving feedback effectively

A
  • listen carefully without interruption
  • stay calm and cordial
  • evaluate what is being said with an open mind and try to understand it
  • seek examples of the behaviour to help you understand
  • paraphrase what you’ve heard
  • seek suggestions for future actions
  • thank the person for giving the feedback
  • you determine what you take from the feedback and how you might modify your behaviour
