Class Studies - Authors and What was done Flashcards
(14 cards)
Lecture 12 - Physical Functioning and Well-being
What did Ringholm et al 2011 do?
Studied inactivity in non cancer patients (12 young males)
- 7 days of bed rest
- Knee extensor exercises before and after bed rest
Lecture 12 - Physical Functioning and Well-being
What did Ringholm et al 2011 find?
Reduced skeletal muscle metabolic capacity and inability for skeletal muscle to adapt to exercise
Lecture 12 - Physical Functioning and Well-being
What did LaStayo et al 2011 do?
40 cancer survivors mean age of 74 years old
- Eccentrically induced work > low levels of exertion produce high muscle workloads, positive changes in muscle and mobility
> recumbent eccentric stepper for adults to resist motion through pushing pedals
Lecture 12 - Physical Functioning and Well-being
What did LaStayo et al 2011 find?
- Increased quad lean tissue
- Knee extension strength
- six minute walk distance
- Decrease time to safely descend stairs
Lecture 12 - Physical Functioning and Well-being
What can we conclude from the LaStayo et al 2011 study?
High force, low perceived exertion may increase muscle size, strength, power and is feasible for older adults
Lecture 12 - Physical Functioning and Well-being
What did Segal et al 2003 study? What type of study was it?
155 prostate cancer survivors scheduled to have ADT for at least 3 months
- Randomized control trial
- Resistance training program, 12 weeks
Lecture 12 - Physical Functioning and Well-being
What did Segal et al 2003 find?
After exercise while undergoing ADT:
- Increased muscular fitness
- Reduced fatigue
Lecture 13 - Recurrence and Survival Outcomes
What did Kroenke et al 2005 study?
Nurses Health Study Participants
- 5204 overweight Breast cancer cases = 533 deaths and 681 recurrences in 27 years
Lecture 13 - Recurrence and Survival Outcomes
What did Kroenke et al 2005 find?
Weight gain of 2.0kg/m2 after diagnosis was associated with
- elevated recurrence risk
- Elevated risk of breast cancer mortality
- All cause mortality
Lecture 13 - Recurrence and Survival Outcomes
What is a limitation and a benefit of a Systemic Review?
Limitation - not experimental
Benefit - Can do lots with information because of the large sample size
Lecture 13 - Recurrence and Survival Outcomes
What did the Systemic review find?
Breast, Colorectal and Prostate cancer all had less chance of dying after cancer diagnosis if they were physically active
Lecture 13 - Recurrence and Survival Outcomes
What did Meyerhardt et al 2006 study?
832 stage III colon cancer survivors after surgery and chemo engaged in exercise
Lecture 13 - Recurrence and Survival Outcomes
What did Meyerhardt et al 2006 find?
Those who engaged in > 18 MET hours/week of activity had 47% improvement in disease free survival compared to inactive patients
