classical conditioning Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is a stimulus
an object that produces a response
what is an unconditional stimulus (UCS)
the object that initially causes an unconditional response
what is an unconditional response (UCR)
automatic reflex that occurs are presented to the unconditional stimulus
what is a neutral stimulus (NS)
an object that initially has no effect on behaviour
what is a conditioned stimulus (CS)
what the neutral stimulus has become
evaluate the generalisability of pavlov’s research
-Uses dogs, humans and animals behave in different ways
evaluate the reliability of pavlov’s research
- used an alternative neutral stimulus to see if there was an effect, the effect was the same and so shows findings were reliable
-study can be replicable
-standardised proce+ dure
evaluate the validity of pavlov’s research
-valid procedure, used a soundproof room which reduces confounds
-low ecological validity, study took place in a lab and not an everyday environment
-animals were caged
evaluate the ethics of pavlov’s research
-animals weren’t directly harmed but they were caged
- animals were also chained and isolation
however this can be excused due to justifiable reason
what is a weakness of using learning theories and behaviourism as an explanation for behaviour
-lack of observation of the mind, we are basing knowledge purely off observation but the mind is significant
