define the key term
motor or movement skills
-an action or task that has a goal and requires voluntary body and/or limb movement to achieve the goal
-it is learned rather than being innate
what kind of skill is it if there are many decisions to make?
if there are many decisions to make, then the skill is a complex skill
what kind of skill is it if there are not many decisions to make?
if there are not many decisions to make, then the skill is a simple skill
what is difficulty in terms of skill acquisition?
difficulty is the
simple-complex skills continuum
practical example of a complex skill?
-a pass by a midfield player in hockey
-has to make a lot of decisions before they pass
practical example of a simple skill?
-a sprint start in swimming
-there are not that many decisions to be made
in terms of skill acquisition
what is the environemntal influence?
the open-closed skills continuum
what is part of the open-closed skills continuum?
-open skills
-closed skills
what are open skills like?
-open skills
-affected by the environment
-movements have to be adapted to the environment and are externally paced
what are closed skills like?
-closed skills
-not affected by the environment
-the movements folllow a set pattern and have a definite beginning and end
-tend to be self paced
practical example of an open skill?
a pass in football
practical example of a closed skill?
a free throw in basketball
in terms of skill acquisition
what is pacing?
-the pacing continuum
-refers to the timing of movements
-often used in conjunction with the open-closed continuum
what does the pacing continuum entail?
self-paced skills and externally-paced skills
what is a self paced skill and an example?
-a self paced skill is a skill where the performer controls the rate at which the skill is executed
-involves proaction by the performer
-usually closed skills
-JAVELIN THROW
what is an externally paced skills and an example?
-the environment which may contain the opponent, controls the rate of performing the skill
-involves a reaction
-usually an open skill
-RECEIVING A SERVE IN BADMINTON
in terms of skill acquisition
what is continuity?
the discrete-serial-continuous skills continuum
what is a discrete skill
example?
-discrete skills have a clear begining and end
-penalty kick in football
what is a serial skill?
-serial skills have several discrete elements which are put together
-sequence of skills in triple jump
what is a continuous skill?
-have no obvious beginning or end
-the end of the movement is the start of the nect
-cycling
in terms of skill acquisition
what is organisation?
high organisation - low organisation continuum
what is a highly organised skill?
-a skill with elements or sub-routines that are very difficult to seperate
-dribbling a basket ball
what is a low organised skill?
-when a skill is split up into sub-routines which are easily identified as seperate movements
-tennis serve
what is a sub-routine?
the elements or separate movements that make up a particular movement
