Climate and Change Flashcards
(29 cards)
Climate
the average weather conditions over 30 years
Interglacials
warm periods
Glacials
cold periods
How long did the quaternary period last?
2.6 million years
The Little Ice Age (2 points)
-1350-1850 AD -was an interglacial period, not an ice age
Evidence of the distant past (Quaternary Period) (3 points)
-fossils of ancient and extinct animals and plants -landforms left by glaciers (mountains) -ice sheet samples (CO2 levels are studied)
Evidence of the recent past (The Little Ice Age) (4 points)
-Old photos/paintings -diaries -newspapers -recorded dates of blossom and migration of birds
Eruption Theory: (3 points)
-ash and gas from volcanic eruption -spreads around stratosphere to block sunlight -cools earth
Sunspot Theory: (3 points)
-black spots on sun’s surface (more energy) -every 11 years -1-2 degrees
Orbital Theory/Milankovitch Cycles: ( 3 points)
-changes in Earth’s cycle -affects amount of sunlight received -warmer when closer to Earth, cooler when further away
Asteroid Collisions: (3 points)
-asteroid hitting Earth’s surface would throw ash and dust into atmosphere -ash and dust block sunlight -cools climate
Little Ice Age effects on people: (4 points)
-cool, wet summers lead to outbreaks of St Anthony’s Fire illness -malaria in several parts of England -great famine lasted 8 years -many farmsteads were destroyed
Little Ice Age effects on environment: (3 points)
-many farms abandoned -change in crops from wheat to potatoes -advancing glaciers closed the gold mines
Ecosystems:
where plants and animals interact with each other and their environment in order to survive
The dinosaur extinction (7 steps)
-possibly caused by massive asteroid and huge volcanic eruption -dust, ash, gas into stratosphere -blocks sun -cools climate -plants don’t grow -dinosaurs have no food -knock on effect through food chain
Megafauna Extinction (4 points)
-(eg big animals such as the woolly mammoth) -climate warmed so they had to relocate -food chains disrupted -humans hunted them to extinction
North Atlantic Drift (4 points)
-causes temp change -clouds travelling across atlantic ocean -pick up water -rains and becomes lighter
UK climate: (3 points)
-maritime climate (mild) -mild temps and rainfall in all months of the year -cooler in North than South
air masses (2 points)
-bring weather conditions with them -have strong influence on temp, air pressure, wind, cloud cover and precipitation
Changing climate of uk: (2 extended points)
- ocean currents: north atlantic drift could change position or weaken, creating a more variable climate -air masses: polar front could shift north, so uk gets tropical air masses, creating warmer and drier summers but wetter winters
% of greenhouse gases produced:
89% CO2, 7% Methane, 3% Nitrous oxide, 1% halocarbons
What does the natural greenhouse effect do?
-warms planet by 16 degrees -allows humans to live (earth would be too cold without)
Global Warming
warming of the earth’s atmosphere caused by enhanced greenhouse effect (caused by humans)
What does global warming cause?
-increasing temperature -sea levels rise
