Climate Change Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is a green-house gas? What are the most common ones?
a gas in the Earth’s atmosphere that absorbs and emits infrared radiation, trapping heat and warming the planet
Carbon dioxide: CO2
Methane: CH4
Nitrious Oxide: N2O
What is the greenhouse effect?
The atmosphere naturally contains greenhouse gases that allow sunlight to pass through and warm the Earth’s surface, but then absorb some of the heat radiated back from the surface, preventing it from escaping into space. This natural greenhouse effect is essential for maintaining a habitable temperature on Earth.
What does the number 350 mean to climate change
350PPM (parts per million) of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the concentration that would allow the Earth to maintain a stable climate that is habitable for humans and other species. Currently we are above 400PPM
What are some climate change solutions
save energy (turn off lights, don’t use unnessicary technology)
swtich to clean and renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, etc.)
take public transportation, walk, bike, carpool
reuse old items (stop consumerism/ mindless buying)
green infrastrcutre (new insolation in houses, dual-flushing toilets, energy efficent appiences)
How are we affected by climate change
frequent and intense weather (storms, heat waves, eco-system disruption, etc.) —–> Hurt cities and infrastucture from it
breathing/ health issues from declining air quality
food and water insecurity (tampered, polluted water and unhealthy soils/land for farming)
mental health challenges (climate anxiety, depression)
rising sea levels —-> loss of land and ocean resources
What is proof that climate change is occuring
melting ice and glaciers in the arctic
longer, hotter summers, extreme weather
changes in the carbon cycle, increased CO2 levels in the air
rising sea levels
what scienctists have told us/found,in general
