Molecular Compounds Flashcards
(5 cards)
Naming Rules
Write the names of both elements in the same order as the formula.
Change the ending of the second element to “ide”.
Add prefixes to both molecules (but never add “mono” on the first element).
H2Cl = Dihydrogen Monochloride
NBr4 = Nitrogen tetrabromide
Prefixes:
1- Mono
2- Di
3- Tri
4- Tetra
5- Penta
6- Hexa
7- Hepta
8- Octa
9- nona
10- Deca
What bond are molecular compounds
Covalent: Two (or more) non-metals sharing valence electrons
How do molecular (covalent) bonds form
Two or more non-metals saring electrons in order to have full-valence shells. This sharing bonds them, creating a molecule
What are di-atomic atoms
HOFBrINCl, these elements are found naturally in pairs so they can have full-valences
Hydrogen: H2
Oxygen: O2
Flourine: F2
Bromine: Br2
Iodide: I2
Nitrogen: N2
Chlorine: Cl2
Traits of molecular compounds
can be solids, liquids, or gasses
not good at conducting electricity
can dissolve in water, though some are more soluble than others
