Competency
Competency is not only the acquisition of knowledge in a specific area.
Competency is also the ability to appropriately apply the knowledge.
The ability to form a working alliance with the client.
The ability to work and practice in a professional and ethical manner with clients, supervisors and the organisation.
No one check you, you ave to take self-responsibility. Don’t wait for things to go wrong
The core competencies are:
a) knowledge of the discipline ( theory, evidence, modes of inquiry)
b) ethical, legal and professional matters,
c) Psychological assessment and measurement relevant to the area of practice
d) intervention strategies relevant to the area of practice
e) research and evaluation, including the systematic identification, critical appraisal and application of relevant research evidence
a) knowledge of the discipline, including:
psychological theories and models (emphasis on research in psychology compared to ores health professionals) ‘
the empirical evidence for the theories and models (be able to evaluate the evidence)
and the major methods of inquiry
b) ethical, legal and professional matters, including detailed knowledge and understanding of ethical, legal and professional issues relevant to the area of practice
Conduct career in a Professional and ethical manner - client, supervisors, etc. as a junior , and organisations. competing agenda’s
mental health act, human right, equity and diversity, children. many ethical considerations.
mainly need to know where to go to seek clarification if an issue comes up
BE ENDORSED
c) Psychological assessment and measurement relevant to the area of practice
most recent, suitable measures.
Clinical psychologists have specialist training in the assessment and diagnosis of major mental illnesses and psychological problems.
Would not use a 30yr old assessment
d) intervention strategies relevant to the area of practice
WHAT AND HOW
practical side: understanding how to interact with clients; read people, know how to change self to interact with a range of people that you wouldnt usually choose to have as friends
Honesty in your own knowledge and skills in relation to these interventions and techniques
MASTERS: CBT
OTHER: Do extra courses. must do the education to apply the technique

CLEAR COMMUNICATION
Communication and interpersonal relationships, including the ability to communicate in written and oral form from a psychological perspective in a style appropriate to a variety of different audiences, and to interact professionally with a wide range of client groups and other professionals
Clarity of ideas to make an argument is key in practice. Need to be logical, step by step, clear, straight forward and make a convincing argument . people are busy and time limited.
people have some idea, and may have heard jargon, but may not really know what it means
CULTURAL CONTEXTS - KNOW SELF; ASK QUESTIONS OR REFER
Working within a cross-cultural context, including demonstrating core capabilities to adequately practise with clients from cultures and lifestyles different from the psychologist’s own
Ask them What is right for them?
REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
must be aware of own processes, confident in seeing and judging own reactions and difficulties and be comfortable to seek support
must monitor self. sometimes prevents psychologist from seeking supervision
Improve Practice and Avoid risks such as boundary violations
